She Said Yes!
A local love story unfolds right here in the pages of Greenwich magazine
Win Betteridge with Natalie Bos
When it comes to over-the-top proposals, do you think you’ve heard it all? Meet Win Betteridge. Win’s family’s eponymous jewelry store has been in town for more than sixty years and has been one of Greenwich magazine’s most loyal advertisers. So when Win decided to propose to his girlfriend, Natalie Bos, he turned to this magazine to help. “I’ve always believed if you’re really in love, you want to shout it from the rooftops. Greenwich magazine was a fun way to propose. And way classier than Plan B—serenading Natalie from the front lawn with an oversized megaphone,” jokes Win.
He took out an ad in the April 2014 issue and page 78 shows him on bended knee with the headline “Natalie…will you marry me?” Her answer was a resounding yes. Here’s how it all happened.
First off, keeping the secret in our offices was key to pulling it off. Only a handful of staffers knew about the plan and those that did were sworn to secrecy (it’s a small world and one slip to a friend who knows a friend who knows Natalie, well, you get it). “I didn’t even tell my husband,” says Greenwich magazine publisher Trish Kirsch.
Secondly, to ensure that nobody in town would see the magazine until after the proposal, the first copies had to be pulled off the press and FedExed to us days before the bulk of magazines left the plant. We then got them to Win.
So with magazine in hand, Win took Natalie up to the Ocean House in Rhode Island for a weekend getaway. There, he asked the staff to set up a candlelight dinner in the couple’s room. A server offered up copies of Greenwich: “The kitchen is running a little slow tonight. Perhaps you would like to read Greenwich magazine while you wait?” Natalie admits she thought it was a little odd, but as she perused through the issue she discovered the proposal, and as she says “you can guess what happened next.”
The couple is planning a May 2015 wedding. You know where you’ll be able to read all about the big day.
