Shopping Around The Style Spectrum

Great new stores to check out

Marmot

Extreme Style

For those who are counting the days until ski season, there’s a cool new spot to shop. Marmot recently opened a flagship store on Greenwich Avenue filled with colorful, high-performance gear designed to protect against the elements. In addition to an extensive line of ski jackets, pants, gloves, hats, thermals and more, Marmot also stocks stylish but highly functional winter jackets, coats and parkas—the “Urban Exploration” collection— and a high-tech line of sleeping bags, tents, and other hiking and camping supplies, as well as lighter weight clothing for running and biking. The company was founded nearly forty years ago by a couple of California college students who loved hiking and climbing and wanted to find gear that could be worn during expeditions to glacial peaks in Alaska and other harsh, suzero conditions. Now the full line of adventure-wear is available right in town. “The new Greenwich location will be a wonderful complement to our existing flagship stores in San Francisco, Chicago and Aspen,” says Mark Martin, president of Marmot Mountain LLC. “We are excited to be a part of the Greenwich community and look forward to showcasing Marmot’s time-tested technical apparel, equipment and accessories.”

Joie de Vivre

A number of top fashion brands tout their looks as “effortless chic,” but the new joie store truly seems to embody it. This elegant, light-filled shop with washed herringbone floors, a fireplace, upholstered chairs, vintage Parisian rugs, and chandeliers feels more like a friend’s home—and its collections are equally sophisticated and feminine, not to mention wearable. The new jeans line launched earlier this fall has proven especially popular, with a waiting list for the So Real cargo skinnies in certain sizes. Other hot items for the upcoming season: Keena leggings, which come in snakeskin and diamond prints among others; asymmetrical cashmere Tambrel sweaters; the double-zip leather jacket; and suede boots in oxblood. For fall-into-winter layering, check out the Andoni rabbit fur vest and the fur scarves in gray and black. If you’re looking for more affordable, comfortable layers, there’s the Soft Joie line of tees, tanks, sweaters and dresses, designed for everyday wear. Finishing touches: accessorize with ankle boots and a bag, such as the top-selling Mabel bucket bag in moss.
