Shopping Around: November

Looking good: jewels, fitness, decor

Gem Dandy

Simon Teakle’s new jewelry shop on Grigg Street is a true extension of its owner. Part British heritage in its décor, with a globe pendant from Jamb of London and an overstuffed sofa with fringed trim, part contemporary with twentieth-century photographs lining the gray walls, its elegantly understated setting brings Teakle’s period gems and expert eye into focus. After years with Christie’s of London and New York (where he sold the Agra diamond and the Rockefeller sapphire) and more recently with Betteridge, Teakle decided to go solo. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do, but it all happened because of this space,” says Teakle. “My aim is to create an environment with a low-key appearance on the street where people can come in and discover something lovely inside.” Those beautiful discoveries span the centuries: antique diamond flower corsage pins, nineteenth-century Chaumet sapphire-and-diamond drop earrings, an art deco 35-carat carved ruby ring circa 1925, a Cartier crescent diamond bracelet from the ’80s, pieces acquired from private collections, estates, auctions and other insider sources. He’s also carrying the contemporary line called Taffin by his friend James de Givenchy. Teakle adores matching pieces with individuals. “Jewelry is an extension of personality,” he says. “I want people to walk out knowing they’re really going to enjoy it, wear it, love it.” 4 Grigg Street, 203-769-5888, simonteakle.com

Combine Training

During a quick chat with the intensely focused Craig Vitale of combine training, an eight-time Ironman competitor, you get the notion that you, too, could become a marathoner or a triathlete—his motivation is that contagious. So imagine what it must be like to have him as a coach. In his new Combine Training space, Vitale and other trainers, including former NFL player, Vince Workman, and Luke Guanzon, work with all ages and levels, from kids on local sports teams to older adult runners to highly competitive triathletes. They use sophisticated methods and machines (an MRI for body conditioning) to test each client and then develop a program and set goals. “We’re all about coaching, putting the right program together for the client,” says Vitale. “We retest people after three months and hold them accountable to their goals.” A father of two boys, Vitale says, “kids are my driving force.” He currently works with Greenwich High football, Greenwich Country Day soccer, and the YMCA Marlins swim team, and also leads by example, competing in triathalons with the kids following his progress online and cheering him on. He aims to help clients excel at their sports of choice, whether running, biking, tennis or team sports. “We work on movement patterns that match the movements in your sport to build stability, strength and power.”

Light Show

A bright, contemporary home-furnishings retailer is illuminating the Post Road’s Design District. room’s new Greenwich showroom is an outpost of the flagship store in Tribeca, founded by Amy Crain, a former Home & Garden editor. The new location was born from “a desire to have all our lighting in one place,” says Crain. Striking lighting like colorful Bocci glass globes, Lindsey Adelman’s sculptural glass and brass chandeliers, and her new woodchuck lamp with turned walnut shades—“it’s like a fantastic mobile for adults,” says Crain—hang from the super-high ceilings. Room also showcases the minimalist upholstered furnishings and case goods that Crain designs. The beauty of her line is that everything can be customized, from the cool linen sofas to the walnut console. Because the made-to-order pieces are built by local artisans and woodworkers, lead time is usually just six to eight weeks. In the showroom, “people can look at things as a starting point and then we’ll build to whatever they need,” says Crain, who creates 3-D drawings to give customers a clear picture of what the finished piece will look like. After all, she adds, “If you can have it tailored to fit your room, why not?” 36 East Putnam Ave., 203-557-9066; roomonline.com
