Family Ties

Bob Capazzo

If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you? I’m not asking in that motherly-rhetorical-question kind of way. Seriously, if all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you? I would.

I have. Granted, I’m a fan of risk-taking fun. (While not an expert at any of them, I have dabbled in rock climbing, the flying trapeze and skydiving.) But even for me, bungee jumping was just plain out of the question. Until, while traveling abroad, my friends and I came upon the birthplace of bungee jumping in New Zealand. And that’s when I took the literal leap of faith.

The act of hurling oneself off a bridge hundreds of feet above a wildly flowing river seems unnatural at best. However, the self-imposed prospect of death made me feel more alive than ever. I can only imagine how alive the families featured in our story “The Call of the Wild” feel. These folks purposefully plunged themselves into shark infested waters, were dropped atop a 7,000-foot mountain with only a pair of skis and sheer will, and climbed the highest mountain on the African continent — and that’s just for starters. They are a new breed of traveler in search of more than rest and relaxation. They are families seeking to push their physical limits and in the process gain a new perspective of the world and themselves.

Albeit in a somewhat tamer style, our cover story “Second to None” also highlights family connections. Three Greenwich families invite us to their homes away from home. These houses are beautiful, certainly, but they are so much more than showplaces. They are retreats for the family to get away from the pressure and stress of everyday life and simply enjoy the great outdoors and most importantly, each other.

November is typically themed our luxury issue, and in today’s times I can think of no better luxury than that of family.
