Finding the Fun

Go outside and play …

Or spend a day at the farm, ballpark, racetrack or nature preserve

Bridgeport Bluefish, Ballpark at Harbor Yard, Bridgeport
all ages
Here, fans can enjoy that pleasant, ballpark feeling without braving the Bronx — and root, root, root for the home team. Plus there are fireworks every Friday night.
Admission: starts at $7. (500 Main Street; 345-4800, ext. 150 for tickets; bridgeportbluefish.com)

Captain John’s Sport Fishing Center, Waterford
ages: at your discretion; trips last up to five hours
The industrious Sunbeam Fleet has “open party” fishing trips for blues and bass (see website for departure times). Charters are also available, as are Light House Cruises.
Prices: Open party excursions cost $53 for adults; $33, children 12 and under; bait is included, rod rental is $5. (15 First Street; 860-443-7259; sunbeamfleet.com)

Huntington State Park, Redding

all ages
The biggest, closest park that allows mountain-bike riding, this 883-acre expanse somehow absorbs the throngs of cycling enthusiasts who come for its wide and shady trails that wind around ponds and up and down gentle hills. Sited high atop Redding Ridge, the
views are awesome; if you come to hike instead of ride, bring the dog and a leash. Admission: free. (Sunset Hill Road; 938-2285; ct.gov/dep/site/default.asp)
While you’re there: The town of Bethel, just five miles north, boasts two of the most oft-cited kid-friendly eateries. Stop first at the Sycamore Drive-In (282 Greenwood Avenue; 748-2716; sycamoredrivein.com), a fifties classic, featuring real live carhops serving hamburgers (order two, they’re small), homemade root beer and the like. Just down the road: Dr. Mike’s Ice Cream (158 Greenwood Avenue; 792-4388) sells the most delicious ice cream on Earth.

Lime Rock Park, Lime Rock
all ages, although little ones may be bothered by the noise
Come summer, this pretty northwest-corner town is abuzz with New England’s sleekest racers and fanciest vintage cars. Hosting hundreds of events every year, there’s something for every auto enthusiast. For the rest of us, the slopeside viewing and picnicking are fun, too. Bring your own blankets, folding chairs and lunch (concession food is available).
Admission: varies per event but for The American Le Mans Series (July 17-18), one of the hottest race events in the business, tickets range from $25 to $75. (Route 112; 800-RACE-LRP; limerock.com)

Maple Lane Farm, Preston
all ages, but little kids love it most
Pick your own berries at this picturesque, 120-acre farm. The Farm Market overflows with local produce, honey, cut flowers, homemade jams and other fresh fare. It’s important to call the twenty-four-hour hotline for what’s ready to pick. June is strawberry month. Price: You pay for what you pick. (57 NW Corner Road; 860-887-8855; maplelane.com)

Mount Tom State Park, Litchfield
all ages, but must be able to hike uphill for a half hour or longer
The easy, well-marked, one-mile trail winds up to a 1,325-foot summit, with pretty views over a lake and hills. Big kids can knock it off in twenty minutes; little ones may double that. And almost no one can resist climbing to the top of the summit’s stone tower. Cool off afterward with a dip in the lake, with on-site changing rooms, bathrooms and concession stand. Fees: $7 on weekends  to park a car registered in the state of Connecticut; $10 for nonresidents. (Route 202; 860-868-2592; ct.gov/dep/ site/default.asp)

The Only Game in Town, North Haven

all ages: height requirements for some activities
This twenty-acre sports complex includes a golf range, mini golf, go-carts, batting cages, arcade and much more. Admission: free, with activities ranging from $1 for ten baseballs in a batting cage to $16 for a monster bucket of balls at the golf range to $7 for a go-kart. (275 Valley Service Road; 203-239-4653; theonlygameintown.com)

{ Outside of Connecticut }

Rock Climbing in the Shawangunks, New Paltz,
New York
ages: 12 and over
The “Gunks” inspire awe in climbers who have scaled rock faces all over the world. Fortunately for newbies, Eastern Mountain Sports offers intensive one-day courses every day from spring through the fall for people 12 and older. Prices: $350 for party of two; $420 for three; includes shoes and all gear needed; $95 for basic clinic. The day runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; call to reserve. (800-310-4504; emsclimb.com)

Yankee Stadium,
Bronx, New York
all ages
Whether you love ’em or hate ’em, a day at the brand-new Yankee Stadium bores no one and, for many games, tickets can be had same-day, purchased at the ticket window. Leave the house at least a few hours before game time to miss the worst traffic into the parking lots. Not a Yankee fan? Buy your tickets in advance for the Red Sox game (August 6–8), sit among Bostonians, and you’ll meet plenty of like-minded folk. (161st Street and River Avenue; 718-293-4300; newyork.yankees. mlb.com)
