From the Editor: Giving You the 411

Bob Capazzo

My mother was one of those women who always knew about the best deals, most obscure boutiques and coolest hidden gems. In fact, over the years it earned her the nickname “The 411 Lady.” If you wanted the gold leaf on the frame of great grandma’s portrait touched up, she had the guy. Or if you were looking for an honest mechanic who would actually deliver your car to you, he was in her Rolodex. If you needed to replace the broken, impossible-to-find finial on that antique lamp, she had the shop.

These weren’t people you could find by searching online or flipping through the yellow pages. They were usually down some odd alley, tucked away in the warehouse district or required a special knock and password (okay, I’m kidding about the last one…kind of). All that knowledge didn’t come over night. It took a lifetime of living and exploring. Consider this issue your personal 411 Lady. For months, our writer Riann Smith, the staff of this magazine, friends and editorial advisors collected interesting tidbits, well-kept secrets and fun facts to present to you in our second annual Insider’s Guide to Greenwich.

There’s a ton of good stuff here—from the yoga teacher, swim instructor and dog trainer that our mom friends swear by to the perfect place to pick up dinner and pawn it off as your own to a shop that will match the signature red on the soles of your Louboutins to make them skid proof. (But the find that got this office buzzing louder than a hive of excited bees is the half-price Botox.) In addition to our great finds, we’ve also got plenty of interesting fodder that’ll help make you a champ if Greenwich is ever a Jeopardy category. Check out the fast facts (how did Byram get its name?), the Avenue by the numbers (how many parking tickets are issued annually?) and our town quiz (what was the average cost of a home in 1978?).

This year marks sixty-five years of GREENWICH Magazine (launched in 1947 as the Greenwich Social Review). For all of these decades, this magazine has been the go-to guide for our residents. Though we have evolved with the times, there is one thing that will never change. That is our focus on what matters to you—the people, places and nuances that are the reasons we choose to call Greenwich home. And what better way to celebrate that mission than to kick off 2012 with our Insider’s Guide? I’m pretty sure even my mom would learn a thing or two from it.
