The Most Popular Ice Cream Flavors in Town

"We all scream for ice cream!"

Summer is finally here and with it comes the special indulgence of enjoying a sweet, refreshing ice cream cone on a warm day. There are plenty of places to grab a tasty scoop in town, but here we round up our three favorite locally-owned spots. We’ve discovered the most popular flavors among Greenwichites, as well as some unique flavors that we bet you’ll be tempted to try.

Darlene’s Heavenly Desires

185 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich

Most popular flavor: Sea Salt Caramel

In the family-friendly hamlet that is Old Greenwich, Darlene’s is a true oasis. With its cheery décor and walls lined with shiny hard candies and chocolate confections, just stepping in the shop is part of the fun. But of course, we all come in for the ice cream and it lives up to the name “Heavenly Desire.” The most popular flavor for the OG crowd may be the Sea Salt Caramel, but if you’re looking for a flavor that really gets the taste buds fired up, go for “Trash Can.” The name may be intimidating but it’s chock full of all our favorite ice cream toppings and flavors -- sprinkles, fudge, nuts and cookie dough come together in a vanilla base for a delightful cone that truly has it all. Take your cone for a window shopping stroll down Sound Beach Ave or a walk in Binney Park. That’s a summer afternoon well spent.

Gofer’s Ice cream

522 East Putnam Avenue, Greenwich

Most popular among kids: Pink Tutu and Blue Monster

Gofer’s has been a Greenwich institution on Route 1 for over a decade now. It continues to be the go-to spot for ice cream lovers and has recently expanded with a new location on the Cos-Cob/Riverside border. Gofer’s caters to kids and its two most popular flavors for the pint-sized set may look sickly sweet (after all, they are bright pink and blue) but the vanilla-based flavor is surprisingly smooth (and obviously delicious). If you’re not up for ice cream, get the guilt-free treat of a Gofer Lite cone or cup. This soft-serve ice cream has just 15 calories per ounce!

Daniella’s Gelataria

315 Greenwich Avenue

Most popular flavor: Nutella

From Haagen Dazs to Pinkberry, there are plenty of options for getting a cold treat on Greenwich Ave, but if you really want to indulge, take a tip from us and go to Daniella’s Gelataria. This family-run shop has been in town for 40 years and it retains an Old World charm that sets it apart. From the family’s Italian accents to the retro décor, you may think that you have been magically transported to Europe. We recommend you get a scoop of Nutella (after all, it’s the town’s favorite flavor). Served in a cute little cup with a teensy spoon, you’ll feel like you’re on a Roman holiday as you stroll down the avenue with your gelato in hand.

Tell us — what's your favorite ice cream flavor, and who makes it best?
