A buying guide for the ultimate gentleman’s gift

What do you get the gentleman that has everything? A fine cigar is a sophisticated choice. But if you don’t know anything about cigars it can be intimidating to know what to buy. We spoke with Michael Cafagno at The Tobacconist of Greenwich to find out about the top three fine cigars and why a Cuban cigar is not what it’s cracked up to be.

What does Michael recommend as the finest cigar in the word? Choose from one of these three:

Davidoff

Simply put, a Davidoff is the finest cigar in the world. Why? This Dominican brand offers the most consistent quality-controlled product on the market. If you give a Davidoff, you know that it’s going to be top rate. Imagine the status of a Tiffany blue box for a woman. That’s how a cigar loving man feels about Davidoff. It epitomizes luxury, status, and celebration.

Flavor: Medium bodied, very smooth, like silk

Cost: $50/cigar

Arturo Fuente Opus X

If you really want to impress a cigar aficionado then go for the Arturo Fuente Opus X. This is the most sought after cigar in the world. Why is it so hard to get? The Fuente family only releases the cigars on a quarterly basis and they are choosy about who they ship to. Lucky for us, The Tobacconist of Greenwich has a good relationship with the family so chances are good that you’ll be able to score this rare cigar from them. 

Provenance: 100% Dominican

Flavor: Strong and spicy

Cost: $125/cigar

Padron Anniversary Line

If you like to give a gift that wraps up well for a statement-making present then the Padron Anniversary Line is the way to go. Padron cigars are boxed press, which means that they are rolled into a square. It is an unexpected shape and looks pretty cool, with the added convenience of not rolling around when you put it down.

Provenance: 100% Nicaraguan

Flavor: Medium, full bodied

Cost: $30/cigar

The myth of the Cuban Cigar

Surprised that there’s not a Cuban cigar on this list? Cuban cigars may have a reputation for being the best in the world but according to Michael Cafagno that has not been the case for the past twenty years. Why? Quality control. First of all, it’s hard to know if you are even getting an authentic Cuban cigar as there are so many counterfeit out there. Second, even a real Cuban cigar does not guarantee a quality product. The problem is that Cuba has been mass producing cigars, which leads to problems with quality control. Only about twenty percent of Cuban cigars will live up to the reputation.

Shopping for the man who has everything just got a whole lot easier. Not only can you impress with your selection of a fine cigar but you can show off your knowledge of why these cigars are the best in the world.
