Take Out Trio

3 Local Spots for Fast, Fresh Food

@monkeybusinessimages/istockphoto

In Greenwich there is no excuse to settle for the standard take out fare of mediocre Chinese food or lukewarm pizza; we are lucky to have plenty of fast and freshly made options in town. Take a break from the kitchen (and steer clear of fast food chains) at our three favorite spots for take out in Greenwich:

Alpen Pantry

If you know Old Greenwich, you know Alpen Pantry. This specialty sandwich shop has been an institution in town for as long even the oldest residents can remember. Gary Kelley has run Alpen Pantry for the past 28 years but his building has been the place to buy specialty meats for over 70 years now. There are plenty of gourmet sandwiches to choose from but the local’s favorite is definitely the Stilton - made with ham, swiss, turkey breast, lettuce, tomato, and Alpen’s own tasty blue cheese dressing served on Russian black bread. After tasting it, you’ll understand how it has stood the test of time.

Aux Delices

For take out that’s fit for a formal dinner party, Aux Delices has you covered. Pickup catered dishes that Martha Stewart would approve of, like a grilled salmon filet with cucumber-dill crème fraiche or their signature Orzo salad with apricots and peaches. For a healthy and fast lunch, Aux Delices also offers modestly sized sandwiches that will curb your hunger without stuffing you silly. Aux Delices co-owner, Debra Ponzek has earned a reputation as Fairfield County’s own celebrity chef with the publication of her new book, The Dinnertime Survival Cookbook. But who needs a cookbook when we can count on Debra’s catered take out foods. Now that’s what we call dinnertime survival!

3 West Elm Street, Greenwich, 203-622-6644

1075 East Putnum Avenue, Riverside, 203-698-1066

Plus locations in Darien and Westport

Garden Catering

Greenwich residents are addicted to the tasty fried chicken, potato cones and seasoned fries that the Carpenteri family has been serving up to the fast lines at Garden Catering for over 20 years. With two locations in Greenwich and five more in Fairfield and Westchester counties, you don’t have to travel far to pickup everyone’s favorite, “the high school special.” If you haven’t experienced this, try it. You can thank us later.

185 ½ Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, 203-637-7699

177 Hamilton Avenue, Greenwich, 203-422-2555

Plus five other locations in Fairfield and Westchester Counties

Supporting small business never tasted so good!
