Better Than Botox?

Biologique Recherche comes to Greenwich

Does beauty really have to hurt? Is plastic surgery a quick fix solution to aging skin? According to the The Delamar Greenwich Harbor’s new Spa Manager, Barbara Aquino, the answer to both questions is a resounding no.

If you are sick of looking at your sunspots, wrinkles and sagging skin you may be ready to bite the bullet and book a consult with a plastic surgeon. But before you go under the knife, you need to get a facial with Barbara at the Delamar. Barbara has a passion for and knowledge of skin that is remarkable (especially when you look in the mirror post-facial). But most exciting is that Barbara is trained in the Biologique Recherche skincare methodology.

You may have never heard of Biologique Recherche — after all, they do not advertise — but if you want your skin to look young, take note (as so many of the Hollywood elite and New York beauty editors have.) The company pioneered using pure, concentrated, raw ingredients long before it became trendy and have always taken a clinical approach to skincare.

The line is so advanced and complicated that you really need a trained esthetician, like Barbara, to understand how to use it correctly. That explains why you can only purchase Biologique Recherche products from a small number of spas in the area. But Greenwichites need not travel into the city anymore to get their fix. Barbara has brought it to town.

Although this once exclusively French company has developed a cult following in the states, those looking for a quick fix are in for a reality check. A regime of facials, in addition to sessions with the Delamar’s new Biologique Recherche Remolding Face Machine, which uses three types of currents to actually remodel the face, are required to reap the full benefits.

The trick to a youthful glow is not to just focus on the dreaded wrinkles and sunspots but to look at the whole face and get it balanced and in shape. After all, you need a foundation before you can build a roof. You may be advised not to start the Face Machine until your skin has first been brought into balance. That means that you need to correct your skin concerns in order of what your skin responds to, which is not necessarily the order that you would choose. This is done via facials that balance PH (a major factor in youthful skin) and correct glaring issues first like sensitive skin and rosacea. Barbara admits that it’s a lot of work but she looks at Biologique as “yoga and pilates for the face” — to see the effects you need to put in the time and effort.

If this all sounds like more trouble than it’s worth, you may still think that going under the knife is a more effective and easier solution. But even if you opt for plastic surgery you need to keep your skin in shape. Your face is in need of TLC even more after a surgical procedure as overly taught skin needs support.

The hard truth is that as with most things in life, there are no shortcuts. If you are willing to put the time in, and to trust Barbara, youthful skin — without surgery — can be just as easily yours as the toned shoulders that you earned from your regular workouts at Equinox. You just might have to make more room in your pilates schedule for facials and face machines.
