A Chocolate Snob's Guide to Hot Chocolate in Greenwich

5 spots to sip quality hot cocoa this winter

Hot chocolate has a rep as a kid’s drink, but in Greenwich there’s no excuse for settling for the syrupy machine-made mixes of your youth. In fact, our town has so many gourmet hot chocolate options that we can break down where to go based on the provenance of the cocoa powder used.

Here is a chocolate snob's guide to Greenwich hot chocolate, separated by region of the world:

French Hot Chocolate

Darlene’s

Walking into Darlene’s in Old Greenwich brings out the kid in all of us. Bright colors, cool candies, and delicious ice creams make for a sweet tooth sanctuary. The hot chocolate here is the most traditional one on this list and is sure to be a favorite of children and sweet tooths. What makes the Darlene hot chocolate so good? It’s made with French powdered chocolate from Les Confitures a l’Ancienne. And the best part is that you can make this delicious hot cocoa at home. Amidst the candies and gifts, Darlene sells Les Confitures a l’Ancienne chocolate powder. Simply mix a couple tablespoons of the powder in a cup of hot whole milk. Don’t you love it when sweet secrets are shared?

One Source Hot Chocolate

J House’s Chocolate Lab

There are a lot of reasons to come to the J House – the restaurant, the bar, but if you’re a chocoholic your favorite reason to visit this trendy hotel is for The Chocolate Lab.

Francois Kwaku-Dongo, The Head Chef at the Eleven14 Kitchen takes chocolate very seriously. His passion runs so deep that he is partner in the Omanhene Cocoa Bean Company which crafts chocolate in Ghana. The Omanhene one source philosophy is rare in the fine chocolate industry which typically ships cocoa beans from Africa to be made into chocolates in France, Switzerland or Belgium. With Omanhene the entire production process takes place in Ghana. The result is a chocolate that is among the finest in the world and that showcases the people and resources of Africa.

The Omanhene hot cocoa powder is made from dark milk chocolate with a 48% cocoa content that makes for a subtly sweet and smooth cup of hot chocolate. Don’t you love it when something tastes and feels good?

Belgian Hot Chocolate

CFCF Roastery & Cafe

CFCF has been in town for about a year and half now so you have probably already figured out that it’s one of the best places to get a coffee buzz. After all, they roast and grind their own beans (with a really cool machine up front to prove it) but if you can manage without the caffeine, you should go for one of their hot chocolates. At CFCF they use Callebaut chocolate from Belgium that has a sophisticated dark chocolate flavor. As with coffee, they’ll make your cocoa however you like. We recommend having it made with steamed whole milk. It may not give you a coffee buzz but the milky sweetness will perk you right up.

118 Greenwich Ave

Meli Melo and Versailles

Further down the avenue, you’ll find Meli Melo and Versailles. Now under the same owners, both of these Greenwich institutions are beloved for their warm and welcoming continental vibe so they offer the perfect spot to enjoy a steaming cup of “chocolat chaud.” Like CFCF, Meli Melo and Versailles know that Callebaut is one of the finest cocoa powders for hot chocolate. They use the Callebaut dark chocolate with 60.3% cocoa. It’s pretty great to know that you can indulge in a gourmet cup of Belgian Hot Chocolate in not one, but three, locations all on Greenwich Ave. A little hot cocoa is the perfect pick me before and/or after shopping!

Meli Melo: 362 Greenwich Ave

Versailles: 339 Greenwich Ave
