A Summer Magazine Publishing Workshop for Aspiring Young Writers
Calling all aspiring young writers. This July, Greenwich Education Group will be offering a two-week writing enrichment workshop, Magazine Mavens©, for rising 6th – 8th graders. Students will have the opportunity to create a magazine about New Canaan events, activities, stories and personalities of interest to teens. The workshop will enable students to get involved in every step of the magazine process, from developing story ideas, to writing and editing articles on topics that interest them, to taking photographs and assisting with layout. On the last day of the workshop, students will present their printed magazine to the President of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce at a magazine “launch party”.
“The magazine workshop is designed to spark students’ creativity while helping them improve their writings skills,” explains Teri Gaberman, GEG Academic Services Director. “The goal is to help them develop compelling article ideas and teach them how to gather material through research and interviews, organize their information, and write and edit polished, informative and entertaining articles, in a casual, fun learning environment.” The workshop instructor, Carey Field, was the editor of the award-winning Wilton Magazine from 2007-2013, as well as a contributing writer and photographer. Prior to serving as editor of Wilton Magazine, she held senior management positions at several leading New York City advertising agencies, including Saatchi & Saatchi and McCann Erickson. She is currently a freelance writer and writing tutor, and works with many middle and high school students. She fell in love with writing in 6th grade, and is thrilled to be sharing her passion for writing with her students.
