DESCRIPTION:<p>\n	 </p>\n<p>\n	 </p>\n<p>\n	                        Amy Sim
on Fine Art\, located at 1869 Post Road East\, Westport is pleased to anno
unce its latest exhibition\, WAX IS HOT!! Selections in Encaustic.  The sh
 ow features</p>\n<p>\n	encaustic work by five artists:  Binnie Birstein\;
Jeri Eisenberg\; Lynette Haggard\; Lisa Pressman</p>\n<p>\n	and Charyl Wei
 ssbach.</p>\n<p>\n	 </p>\n<p>\n	                        Encaustic is a wax
based medium characterized by luminous color and a lush surface.  It is o
ver 2\,000 years old\, but has experienced a tremendous revival among many
contemporary artists. The process itself is not simple.  It involves melt
ing wax\, adding pigment\, painting and fusing.  Painting in encaustic mus
t be done quickly as the molten wax paint begins to harden the moment that
it leaves it heat source. </p>\n<p>\n	 </p>\n<p>\n
There are many different ways to make encaustic painting.  Each of the a
rtists in this exhibition use encaustic differently.</p>\n<p>\n	 </p>\n<p>
Binnie Birstein’s work is about energy and spatia
l ambiguity.  In many of the works there is a central spiral set against a
grid.  There are strong physical elements that come from the intensity of
layering\, cutting in\, scraping and manipulating the images with ink\, o
ilstick\, pencil and graphite.  These tools make marks in the wax fueled b
y the artist’s motivation. Although these works may incorporate a geometri
c framework\, expressiveness becomes the ultimate driver of the compositio
ns\, one mark or layer leading to another and creating sensations of movem
 ent\, progression and dissonance.</p>\n<p>\n	 </p>\n<p>\n
Jeri Eisenberg’s diptych and triptychs are photo-based. Images of
nature are captured with oversized pinhole or defocused lens\, printed on
Japanese Kozo paper\, and infused with encaustic medium. The works have a
translucency and luminance.  They purposefully balance the concrete and th
e abstract.  Ephemeral elements fade in and out of recognizable form. </p>
 <p>\n	 </p>\n<p>\n	                        Lynette Haggard’s work explores
material history\, sensory perception and reconstructive memory.  Beautif
ul encaustic paintings are built up by layering and reworking</p>\n<p>\n
 </p>\n<p>\n	 </p>\n<p>\n	 </p>\n<p>\n	 </p>\n<p>\n	surfaces\, then using s
uperimposed lines and grids for excavating.  She explores the relationship
of color\, transparency and opacity.  There are multi-layers of energized
\, sensual surfaces that combine the past and present\; alluding to the di
mension of time. Haggard’s intent is to connect a place of perception that
resonates with the viewer’s sensory perceptions.      </p>\n<p>\n	 </p>\n
<p>\n	            Lisa Pressman’s beautiful abstract work is rooted in pla
y\, a sense of discovery and a passion for revealing the unknown. Images e
merge from the artists’s translation of experiences from the outside world
.  Motion\, energy and balance are key to the work.  There is a deliberate
dialogue between intentional marks and accidents unfolding.</p>\n<p>\n	 <
/p>\n<p>\n	            Charyl Weissbach’s encaustic work uses minimal colo
r\, pattern and arboreal-based imagery.  She explores nature’s vastness an
d mysterious allure.  Her work is a dialogue between color\, resin and pig
mented wax.  Gold leaf\, flowing shapes and ornamental designs are metapho
rs. The work is elegant\, mysterious and beautiful.</p>\n<p>\n	 </p>\n<p>
