What You Have to Try at: Tarry Lodge

Three dishes to check out at this Westport Italian restaurant



You’ve probably been to Tarry Lodge before. You know, the restaurant situated conveniently across the way from the Westport train station that serves consistently delicious Italian food from celebrity chef, Mario Batali. Something that I truly appreciate about Tarry Lodge IS that certainty of consistency that comes with every dining experience. I have yet to be let down by any choice that I have made there, which is always a somewhat encouraging sentiment. Whether you are in the mood for a delicious, thin crust pizza, a comforting bowl of pasta, a fresh salad or anything in between, Tarry Lodge probably won’t let you down.

Appetizers:

Gorgonzola Salad with bibb lettuce, frisee & walnuts

This salad is definitely large enough to split between a few people at the table, or enough for an entrée for one. Flavor-wise, this salad well combines several different flavor profiles to create a perfectly balanced starter. The sweetness of the walnuts (they are candied and oh so wonderful) is perfectly balanced by the bite of the Gorgonzola cheese and the sweet-tartness of the cranberries. The combination of the sweet and smooth bibb lettuce combines well with the frissee, and the addition of thinly sliced apples adds a wonderful crispness to the dish. So, let’s recap. We have sweet, tart, salty, plus some crunchy texture-wise. Sounds like a winner.

Salmon with Rapini & Roasted Tomatoes

Regrettably (or not), I am somewhat of a creature of habit when it comes to this salmon dish and order it nearly every time I make a visit to Tarry Lodge. If asked, I normally order my salmon medium, and it comes out perfectly moist on the inside with a wonderful seared crust on the outside. The accompaniments to the salmon work in perfect harmony, as the almost sweet richness of the roasted tomatoes pairs perfectly with the bitter Rapini. It’s good stuff, really. I wouldn’t make up stories. That’s why I’m almost immune from ordering anything else, I really have to try and stop myself next time. (I am quite pleased to report, however, that during my most recent trip I ordered the Branzino and it was just the bees knees)

Prosciutto pizza with tomato, mozzarella and arugula

Well, you’re at an Italian restaurant; it would be downright criminal not to order pizza or pasta! My boyfriend decided to order the prosciutto pizza (which, by the way, looked really good. I’m certainly not complaining about my salmon but, as we all know, there’s not much wrong with a fine slice of pizza). He liked the pizza because of the different flavor profiles that it brought to the table (no pun intended). The saltiness of the prosciutto was balanced by the peppery bite of the arugula, both of which were perfectly married by the warm and delectable mozzarella.

Being a native of Queens, NY, he certainly has the folding technique down. I know what you're thinking and, yes, he could probably teach Mayor De Blasio a thing or two about proper pizza eating technique.

Other things you should try:

  • Tricolore Salad with White Bean Vinaigrette
  • Sausage Pizza with Tomato and Gorgonzola
  • Spaghetti Alla Carbonara
  • Whole Branzino w/ Grilled Fennel & Lemon Jam (sometimes it is served with potatoes, depending on the season)
  • Porchetta Panino with Provolone, Grilled Onions & Broccoli Rabe w/ Insalate Verde (served at lunch)
